BMW Unveils 2014 X5

The all-new 2014 BMW X5 is here and for the first time it offers rear-wheel-drive.

BMW has revealed full details and gallery of photos of its all-new X5 SUV, or SAV (Sport Activity Vehicle) in BMW-speak. Compared to its immediate predecessor, the new X5 isn’t a dramatic departure but there are a few notable changes. For starters, buyers can now opt for the sDrive35i trim, the first time a rear-wheel-drive version of the vehicle has been offered. All-wheel drive, of course, remains optional. The base engine is the automaker’s familiar 3.0-liter twin turbo inline-six that’s good for 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque and mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

This engine-gearbox combo, according to BMW, will haul the X5 from 0-60 mph in about 6.2 seconds. For those wanting more beef to their steak, the X5 xDrive50i is powered by the latest version of the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that produces 445 hp and 480 lb-ft. It too is paired with the same eight-speed slushbox and can make the dash to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. The diesel-powered xDrive35d comes with a new 3.0-liter inline-six oil burner that’s good for 255 hp and 413 lb-ft. The new X5’s exterior design isn’t dramatically different from before, but we can clearly see styling cues taken from the latest 3 Series in the front grille.

Overall, the 2014 X5 has a more sculpted look, notably the side character lines, front air intakes and three-dimensional LED taillights. The new interior has standard wood trim and gloss black surfacing with chrome accents. A variety of leather upholstery options such as Nappa leather are also on hand. Also standard is Driving Dynamics Control and electric power steering, but buyers can tack on other high-tech toys like Active Driving Assistant and Active Cruise Control. Final prices weren’t announced, but expect the new X5 to arrive in showrooms at the end of the year.
