Cadillac May Build a Halo Car After All

It may not be a stylish convertible like the Ciel concept, but Cadillac is still planning to do a large RWD sedan.

Only last week reports emerged that Cadillac had effectively cancelled plans to build a large rear-wheel-drive sedan that would compete directly with the likes of the BMW 7 Series. However, that may have proven to be a bit premature as sources are now claiming only a “large luxury” model was scrapped. Plans are still going forward for a RWD sedan that will be placed above the XTS in both size and pricing. That “large luxury” model could very well have been something along the lines of the Ciel concept that was unveiled in 2011 at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

A production version of that large drop top would have been fantastic, but there were reportedly design as well as cost issues. This same inside source is also claiming that Cadillac will debut a new large sedan concept at Pebble Beach this August. However, Cadillac is still being cautious in regards to its future large sedan plans. A Cadillac source admitted as much by stating that “In the past, we would have gone ahead with this (a not fully researched concept) and only then realized we made a mistake when we started losing a lot of money on it.” We’ll just have to wait until next month to see what’s being planned, but at least a large Caddy RWD sedan is still very much in the cards.
